Additions for Penny

Post by Gnome! »

Sooo today I gets a message from me wood turning gun shooting mate (whom shall be named BT) down the road to bring my ball mold down for him to inspect and save so I can cast two balls instead of one and while at it he offered to turn up a mold tapping stick. After doing the morning chores I meandered down with the mold and he set to work on buffing out the cavity that I had scratched and did a pretty good job on repairing it.

Then he turned his attention to the tapping stick and before I could get the camera out to take progress pics it was complete

So while standing there gawking at his handy work I asked if he had anything to make a funnel for a long drop tube for the Penny and his eyes lit up with glee at the challenge. After a bit of a rummage under his house he brings in a nice peace of western red cedar and sets about the task of making a funnel but first he needed the tube so he could get the right sized hole for it to fit. I wandered back home to check on my slumbering son and grab a dozen eggs and the tube, and alloy arrow shaft that that had been made to look like a wood shaft.

Back to BT's with the shaft and a dozen fresh eggs from the chooks and he was the into his mindset and I was prepared with the camera this time :D

Once drilled to the desired depth it was onto the chisels

Arial shot !
20160905_130717.jpg
Chiseling completed and looking pretty darn good.
20160905_130001.jpg
BT then hit the hole with the flapper disc thingy.

20160905_130522.jpg
Once the hole was judged happy it was onto the separating from the main block.

20160905_131823.jpg
Seeing a bit of edge grain there :D
20160905_131804.jpg
And its ready for shaping with a chisel

Nope... not happy with the nature of the timbers fibers it was decided it would be better better and easier to rip it to shape with the sander
20160905_133424.jpg
Once shaped it was down to the final sanding and for that the lathe and aid of a mini tennis ball was employed.

After the final sand the shaft inserted and a little bit of belling to the end of the shaft to help it sit snug in its new home it was a coat of Gillies stock wax is applied.

It was out into the sun for final pics to show off the beautiful grain

It looks just so purty in the sun :D

A little drop or two of super glue to hold it in permanent place on the shaft and perhaps an o-ring under it for adjustment from the muzzle end.

But wait ............

Just when you thought this was the end of the thread  there is more to come

BT also turned up a way better handle for my swiveling range/ram rods out of a peace of 6 inch Tallowwood veranda post from the Branxton Hotel that was renovated six years ago, the posts were holding the veranda there for over 118 years.

Now even though it is a very nice hard bit of timber I went one step further to add some true character to it.

So here's a teaser of how and what is going to change it.

The use of a mandrel and some old coins is part of the transformation.

So after some working out of where to center and drill the mounting holes for the coins it was my turn to set them and get them looking their best.

Marked the center lines.

Final check before drilling.

And the holes are being set.
20160906_185019.jpg
Once I had polished and glued the coins in place it was time to give the final touch of class by coating the lot with gloss spray enamel :D

This was my Fathers gift to me it's the 1st Thripence he found in a Christmas pudding cake the year I was born. He kept it for 30 years before handing it to me when I started collecting the old coins, 1943 also happens to be the year he was born.

The rest are some of the ones that I like most out of the coins I have.

I hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as I have :D

Indeed... I had no idea what that was turning out to be/look like until you got to the end. Nice!
