need some input on my new icons...

working on my new forum icons that go with my TimeandSpace style. here's what i have so far...

this 1 set of images are going to work with all the style colour changes.

that said, in order to make them show that something is for example unread, i was thinking of adding a colour to them like this...

does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on what direction to take as i feel that the colour seems to be too bland and lacking creativity. haven't been doing anything like this for some time and trying to get my head back into it
