looking for someone to port a phpBB2 mod...

Post by spaceace »

coding is not my thing and i used a shoutbox mod on a phpBB2 board and it was clean, simple, and did everything i wanted for a shoutbox. all the shout/chat mods that are being made are moving away from being simple and have way too many things added to them for my liking and would like to know if someone would/could port the attached phpBB2 shoutbox mod to phpBB3 for me.

Why not just use Mchat, its the best Shoutbox out there. Makes AJAX look like child's play. Mchat is real easy to install as well and is ran from the ACP, yes that's right the ACP.

Do you use it? Does it match itself to your forum colors or just stands out?

It will match itself to your forum colors.

It matches for about 95% but all you have to do is go to its colors.css and make a change for custom tweaks no mod ever matches you 100% too many varables out there for that.

Now when I say a tweak its the text box everything else falls in line with your style. I love it and yes I use it.

Sadly I do not allow guests to go to the chat, so if you were a member of our site, you would see it, ie. mini-chat up top of our forum click it and poof there you are.

I hate Handyman and Ajax chat bunch of arrogant folks who think they have it but in the end they are far from where PHP is going and that is ACP driven Mods. Most folks simply do not want to code changes....

Give Mchat a look, if you get stuck I am happy to help you. I like it. You can run it on the index and a separate section on your site. We run it on its own page and not on the index. Folks that want to chat know where it is.

i had beta tested mchat when it's author had porn pop-ups that you had to go through to get to the download... and yes, i said porn pop-ups. search the posts on phpbb.com and you will be able to find mine. i also have witnessed the multiple post bug in it as well. i had submitted a chat and it didn't show right away, then about 5 seconds later, 20 identical posts appeared. it's also bloated with too many options for my liking. the shoutbox i want to port is a simple shoutbox and nothing more. i don't need archives, separate chat page, acp controls, edit ability(it's a shoutbox, don't post it if you need to edit it), i don't even really want a delete option but kinda have to have it for anything that should not be seen

in my opinion, Handyman's chat works great and is perfect for what i want and the shoutbox i want ported is even better. i don't like mchat.

here's my post about the porn... the author also seemed unhappy when a mod locked and removed the download link too
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 5#p9461055

anyway, i won't use mchat...ever :|

Um that was long before RM took it over. The mod is flawless now. I have been using it for nearly 6 months. But each to his own, I really hate Handyman, a real peace if you ask me but that is my opinion and I hate having to go into my files to mod. the more ACP driven mods there are the more I will used them.

Perhaps what really got my goat was the rudeness of Handyman, I watched his posts to people asking for help and he belittled and berated lots of folks. To me if you want people to use your mods then be ready to support them and understand most are not coders who seek help. Plus his mod requires more time to install.

So you can have porn or be treated like crap? Depends on what flavor you like, LOL :)

Good debate, but had to defend the new mod that does not have the porn issues you described. Took me about 10 min max to install it. The archive can be purged thus freeing up your Server... Very nice feature, I know AJAX also has a code you can enter somewhere and it will self purge the chat doing the same thing but got to code yourself...

Will you explain to me what you mean by ported?

So how is that new style coming?
